At the Build 2025 developer conference, Microsoft introduced the open Natural Language Web (NLWeb) project, designed to radically simplify the creation of natural language web interfaces. The company states that NLWeb can easily transform any website into an AI-powered application.
Microsoft aims to broaden AI adoption across websites and simplify online information retrieval using natural language queries. The company draws parallels between NLWeb and HTML, which democratized the internet by enabling anyone to create web pages.
NLWeb works by leveraging existing standards like RSS alongside other web data, then combining this information with large language model (LLM) tools. The result is an interface usable by both humans and AI agents.
Each NLWeb instance functions as an MCP server (Model Context Protocol), enabling website discovery and accessibility for participants within the same MCP ecosystem.
Eventbrite, Shopify, and Tripadvisor have reportedly begun implementing NLWeb technology. Microsoft plans initial testing with a limited number of sites to debug and refine the standard.
NLWeb details are available on Microsoft's official site. The project's source code is hosted on GitHub.
