Microsoft unveiled compact versions of Surface Pro and Surface Laptop

Surface

As expected, Microsoft officially announced two new devices in the Surface lineup — the Surface Pro (12 inches) and the Surface Laptop (13 inches). The devices will go on sale on May 20, 2025, starting at $799 and $899, respectively.

Surface Pro 12-inch

The compact version of the Surface Pro features a 12-inch display with a 90 Hz refresh rate and symmetrical bezels. At its core is the ARM-based Snapdragon X Plus processor, which delivers solid performance and smooth operation while enabling the tablet to last an entire workday on a single charge. The device utilizes a completely passive cooling system.

One of the key features of the new Surface Pro is the redesigned body with built-in magnetic charging for the Surface Slim Pen on the back of the device. You no longer need the Surface Pro Keyboard accessory to charge and store the pen.

However, the keyboard is still offered as a separate accessory priced at $149. It features a "smooth matte" palm rest and connects to the tablet via pogo pins. Unlike the accessory for older Surface Pro models, this one does not attach to the bottom bezel of the display, meaning the upper part of the keyboard will not be elevated above the desk. There’s also no tactile touchpad like in the Surface Pro Flex Keyboard. However, it includes backlighting and a new hinge that allows it to rotate 360 degrees and lay flat against the back of the tablet.

The new Surface Pro supports Windows Hello for face recognition-based unlocking. This technology is considered faster and more secure.

The tablet has two USB-C ports. For the first time, there is no traditional magnetic Surface Connect port. Charging is now done through USB-C, with the corresponding cable included in the box.

Surface Laptop 13-inch

The compact Surface Laptop can be considered the successor to the Surface Laptop Go but comes with significant changes and under a new name. The starting price of the device is $899, which is $100 more than the Surface Laptop Go 3, but $100 less than the 13.8-inch Surface Laptop 7.

The new model features a 13-inch touchscreen with a resolution of 1080p (1920×1280) and a 60 Hz refresh rate. Unlike the Surface Laptop Go 3, the device has a fully aluminum body.

Windows Hello support is confirmed. A fingerprint scanner is integrated into the power button.

Another notable addition is the inclusion of a backlit keyboard.

The design of the laptop has been slightly revamped — it now features more rounded edges, making it resemble the MacBook Air more closely. The port layout has also changed: on the left side, you’ll find one USB-A port and a 3.5 mm audio jack, while on the right side, there are two USB-C ports.

Unlike the compact Surface Pro, this new model still uses active cooling, which should ensure higher performance under load.

Finally, Microsoft claims that the 13-inch Surface Laptop offers the best battery life in the entire Surface lineup — up to 23 hours of video playback. This even surpasses the 15-inch Surface Laptop 7 (20 hours).
