Changes to Windows 10, Windows 11 and Microsoft apps for Europe

Microsoft

Windows 10/Windows 11

Microsoft has detailed changes coming to Windows 10, Windows 11, and its applications to comply with the Digital Markets Act (DMA) in the European Economic Area (EEA). These changes will first appear in Insider builds before rolling out to stable versions of the OS and applications.

Default Browser

  • The "Set default" button in Settings now handles a broader range of link types (ftp, http, https, read) and file formats (.htm, .html, .mht, .mhtml, .shtml, .svg, .xht, .xhtml, .xml) when the browser supports their registration.
  • Setting a default browser will now automatically pin it to the taskbar, with optional checkboxes to decline this behavior.
  • Browsers can now be set as the default PDF viewer if they've registered this capability.
  • Some changes are already testing in Beta channel builds (26120.4151), with stable versions for Windows 10/11 coming in July.

Windows Search

  • Third-party apps can now display web search results in Windows Search. When an app registers this capability, its search provider becomes automatically selected upon installation.
  • Improved interface for viewing results from multiple search engines via tabs at the top of the search window.
  • Search engine order can be customized in Settings.
  • These changes are currently in Insider builds and will reach stable Windows 10/11 versions in early June.

Microsoft Store

  • EEA users can now uninstall the Microsoft Store via Start menu or Settings like any other app.
  • Reinstallation of the Microsoft Store remains possible.
  • Apps installed through the Store will continue receiving updates even after Store removal.
  • These changes will arrive in Windows 10/11 during 2025.

Microsoft Applications

  • Microsoft Bing in Windows Search will now open links in the default browser (EEA only). Already in Insider builds, coming to stable versions in early June.
  • Start Experiences apps powering widgets and lock screen content will use default browsers. Windows 11 users see this in June (excluding Windows 10's "News and Interests").
  • Microsoft Edge won't prompt to become default unless manually launched (e.g., via taskbar icon). Implemented in Edge 137.0.3296.52 (May 29, 2025).
  • Other Microsoft apps won't suggest Edge reinstallation after removal (except Edge-based PWAs from Store). Related app updates arrive in June.
