Microsoft's support page has been updated with new information about the Extended Support Updates (ESU) program for Windows 10, through which the company will continue providing security updates for the operating system on a paid basis. Recall that Windows 10 support will officially end on October 14, 2025.
The company confirmed that a Microsoft account is mandatory to register a Windows 10 device for the ESU program. However, there's good news: a single Windows 10 ESU license will cover up to 10 devices linked to that account. This means users won't need to purchase separate $30 licenses for each computer.
Previously, it was believed that a Microsoft account would only be required for the free ESU update option (in exchange for syncing system settings via Windows Backup). Many assumed the $30 license purchase would allow bypassing Microsoft account requirements.
Microsoft has now clarified: All ESU security update options require a Microsoft account, regardless of the acquisition method.
