Microsoft offers to update any application through the Windows Update

Windows 11

Microsoft has launched a private preview of the Windows Update Orchestration Platform, enabling developers to distribute application updates through Windows Update. Initially targeting business applications, the platform will eventually support any application or tool.

"We're developing a unified intelligent update coordination platform capable of managing any updates (apps, drivers, etc.) alongside Windows updates."
Angie Chen, Product Manager, Microsoft

Currently, most Windows applications update through independent mechanisms separate from the OS. The new platform will let developers leverage Windows Update benefits like:

  • Activity-based update scheduling
  • Battery level awareness
  • Renewable energy availability optimization
Supported applications will appear in the Update History.

Windows Update Orchestration Platform will support:

  • MSIX and APPX packaged applications
  • Select classic Win32 applications
Integrated applications will automatically receive future Windows Update improvements.

Microsoft previously encouraged Store distribution, but many popular apps (including Microsoft's own) remain absent. The Windows Package Manager alternative sees primarily developer and power user adoption.
