Announcement of Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27924 (Canary Channel)

Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27924

Windows Insider Program 11

Microsoft has released a new preview build of Windows 11, number 27924, to Windows Insider participants using the Canary channel.

Full build number: 10.0.27924.1000.rs_prerelease.250808-1602.

What's new

Snipping Tool update

Microsoft has released an update to the Snipping Tool (version 11.2507.14.0) for Windows 11 Insiders using the Dev and Canary channels. This version introduces the ability to record video of a specific application window. To get started, switch to the "Record" option on the toolbar and, in the "Recording area" dropdown menu, select window mode.

When window mode is selected, the Snipping Tool automatically adjusts the recording area to precisely match the chosen application window, making setup quick and accurate. However, once recording begins, the area remains fixed—so if the application moves or is covered by another window, the recording area will not follow it. This provides a simple and convenient way to capture activity within a specific screen region without needing post-recording trimming or adjustments.

Features for Copilot+ PCs

Insiders on the Windows 11 Canary channel now have access to several exclusive features for Copilot+ PCs, including:

Please note that some features, such as enhanced Search and the AI agent in Settings, are being rolled out gradually. Microsoft continues to work on enabling certain functionalities. For example, image description via Narrator is not yet available. Don't be surprised if some features are not immediately visible after updating to this build on your Copilot+ PC.

Microsoft notes that the quality of these features may not match that of the same features on the Dev or Beta channels. Some announced features may not function correctly. The company intends to document significant known issues. One such issue with Click to Do is listed below.

Updated "Advanced" page in Settings

Microsoft has introduced an updated "For developers" page in the Settings app, now renamed to "Advanced," which includes several new features. This change aims to make settings more accessible to a broader range of users. The page can be found under Settings → System → Advanced.

Developers have added several new options to the page: "Enable long paths," "Virtual workspaces," and "File Explorer + version control."

  • The "Enable long paths" feature removes the MAX_PATH limitation for standard Win32 functions when working with files and directories.
  • "Virtual workspaces" allow users to enable or disable virtual environments such as Hyper-V, Windows Sandbox, and others.
  • "File Explorer + version control" enables displaying Git information directly in File Explorer. Simply select your repository folder, and File Explorer will show details such as branch name, number of changes (diff), last commit message, and more.

Changes and improvements

  • Input:
    • The mouse pointer indicator has been made slightly more transparent to make it easier to see what's beneath the crosshair when enabled.
    • The keyboard shortcut for the new pointer indicator has been temporarily changed from CTRL + WIN + X to CTRL + WIN + ALT + X to reduce the number of accidental activations.
  • Windows MIDI Services:
    • The in-box preview version of the MIDI service and API includes a critical change based on feedback, allowing optional waiting for full message transmission before returning from function calls. Any applications written for previous versions of the Windows MIDI Services MIDI 2.0 SDK must be updated to the latest preview version available at https://aka.ms/midireleases and recompiled to function correctly.

Fixes

  • General:
    • Fixed an issue where the progress indicator could appear as a rectangular glyph when upgrading to previous builds.
  • Widgets:
    • Fixed an issue where widgets disappeared or failed to function in the previous build for some Insiders.
  • Remote Desktop:
    • Fixed an issue observed in previous builds where Remote Desktop used only the primary monitor, even when configured for multiple monitors.
  • Other:
    • Fixed a crash in the webauth.dll library observed in the previous build, which could affect the use of passkeys.

Known issues

  • General:
    • [Important note for Copilot+ devices] If you switch to the Canary channel from Dev, Release Preview, or the stable version of Windows on a Copilot+ device, you may encounter an issue when using a PIN or biometrics to sign in. An error message "Something went wrong, your PIN isn't available" with code 0xd0000225 will appear. To recover your PIN, click the "Set up PIN" button.
    • Opening the "Edit Group Policy" window may trigger multiple pop-up error messages related to various elements.
    • This build contains an issue with the dao360.dll file, which may cause some applications to crash.
  • Click to Do:
    • [New] Intelligent text and image actions may not work, and Click to Do may crash. This issue will be fixed in upcoming builds.

Happy updating!
