Reports have emerged that Microsoft is developing a new hybrid processor (APU) codenamed Magnus for its next-generation Xbox consoles. The chip's unique design is said to enable Microsoft to create an entire lineup of gaming devices with varying performance levels.
In a recent podcast, Digital Foundry experts analyzed leaks about the Magnus APU in detail. They claim its design fundamentally differs from anything seen in previous or current Xbox and PlayStation console generations.
Microsoft appears to be abandoning traditional monolithic architecture where CPU and GPU reside on a single die. Instead, they're adopting a chiplet design with separate dies for central and graphics processors. This approach offers several advantages:
This is undoubtedly a more complex and expensive processor design. However, the architectural advantages could potentially reshape the gaming PC market landscape. For AMD as the chip supplier, creating a compact and potentially more affordable "Xbox PC" based on Magnus could represent a significant success. Offering consumers a cheaper alternative to expensive PC builds might capture substantial market share.
Currently, Microsoft's exact plans for the new Xbox generation remain unclear. An "Xbox PC" powered by the Magnus APU would align perfectly with Microsoft's strategy of building a unified Xbox gaming ecosystem across various devices.
If realized, this could transform the traditional Xbox vs PlayStation rivalry. Rather than directly competing with PlayStation 6, Xbox would target an entirely different market segment.
Additionally, rumors suggest the new Xbox generation may launch before PlayStation 6.
