Windows Central: next-gen Xbox won't use Snapdragon ARM processors

Xbox/Qualcomm

Qualcomm's official website has posted a job listing mentioning work on the next-generation Xbox "powered by Snapdragon solutions." Based on this information, Thurrott.com speculated that new Xbox consoles might use Snapdragon ARM processors.

  • Support sales activities for next-generation Surface and Xbox products powered by Snapdragon solutions
  • Identify and drive strategic business opportunities for Qualcomm in these areas
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders including legal, finance, business units, marketing and field teams to help define next-generation Surface and Xbox product portfolios

However, Windows Central has disputed this information, citing sources familiar with Microsoft's plans. The next Xbox generation won't use Qualcomm processors as Microsoft prioritizes maximum backward compatibility with existing game libraries. Emulating games originally designed for AMD architecture on Snapdragon processors would require excessive computational resources beyond Qualcomm chips' capabilities.

More likely, the job listing refers to improving compatibility between Snapdragon devices (including Microsoft Surface) and Xbox applications, Xbox Game Pass subscription, and Xbox Play Anywhere titles. Currently, Copilot+ PC owners can't download many Xbox PC games from Microsoft Store due to compatibility issues.
