Microsoft Edge 139

Microsoft Edge

Microsoft has begun rolling out the stable version of Microsoft Edge 139 (139.0.3405.86), which includes several new features, improvements, and bug fixes.

Fixes

  • Fixed an issue preventing MIP-protected PDFs from opening in various sovereign cloud environments (including GCCH), which previously displayed the error: "Permissions required. Please contact the file owner to request access."
  • Resolved IE mode issues affecting PDF display, Java applet execution, and information panel rendering.

Stability Improvements

  • Fixed browser crashes occurring during first launch when the BrowserSignin policy is configured with "Force (2) = Require users to sign in to use the browser (all profiles)."

Updates

  • Opening external links in recommended profiles. When Microsoft Edge is set as the default browser for external links, applications like Microsoft Teams or Outlook can now recommend specific profiles for link opening, overriding user-specified default profiles. Administrators can control this via the EdgeOpenExternalLinksWithAppSpecifiedProfile policy.
This feature is being rolled out gradually (controlled feature rollout) and may not be immediately available to all users.
  • Wallet feature changes. Microsoft is deprecating the Wallet feature (including both Settings and Mini-Wallet accessible via profile icons). Users will be redirected to new password/payment/personal info management interfaces in Settings. Details available in this article.
This feature is being rolled out gradually (controlled feature rollout) and may not be immediately available to all users.
  • Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat toolbar visibility policy. Edge for Business now includes the Microsoft365CopilotChatIconEnabled policy to control Copilot's toolbar visibility. This policy takes precedence over HubsSidebarEnabled when both are configured.
  • Real-time compromised password alerts. Edge now integrates password breach notifications directly into the browsing experience, alerting users when saved credentials appear in known data leaks. Administrators can control this via the PasswordMonitorAllowed policy.
This feature is being rolled out gradually (controlled feature rollout) and may not be immediately available to all users.
  • Settings improvements. The Settings interface has migrated to WebUI2 technology for better responsiveness, with additional UX refinements including streamlined navigation, optimized content organization, and improved consistency.
  • Personal info autofill configuration. A new toggle in edge://settings/autofill/personalInfo allows users to consent to web form field label collection (e.g., "Name," "Email") to improve autofill accuracy. Only field labels (not user-entered data) are collected, stored per Microsoft's privacy standards.
This setting inherits from existing autofill policies (AutofillAddressEnabled, EdgeAutofillMlEnabled), where disabling EdgeAutofillMlEnabled also disables this feature.
  • Web AI APIs for writing assistance. Edge now implements Writing Assistance API and Prompt API (for extensions) using the local Phi-4-mini language model. These jаvascript APIs (enabled via Edge flags) allow websites/extensions to leverage on-device AI capabilities with network independence and enhanced privacy (data never leaves the device). Administrators can control availability via the GenAILocalFoundationalModelSettings policy. Currently unavailable in China.
  • Performance & Secure Network separation. The "Browser Essentials" section has been split into distinct "Performance" and "Secure Network" features, both accessible from the "Settings and more" (⋯) menu.
  • Enterprise sync reset. Users experiencing sync issues between authenticated devices can reset sync data via edge://settings/profiles/sync/reset. Use only when sync data remains available on at least one device or when complete sync data removal is desired.
Note: Edge 139 enables reset for "No permissions" MIP errors, while Edge 140 will add support for "Service disabled" MIP errors.
  • Microsoft AutoUpdate policy update. The MAUEnabled policy (allowing continued use of Microsoft AutoUpdate on macOS) will be deprecated in Edge 140 as Edge now uses EdgeUpdate.
