In pre-release builds of Microsoft Edge, some users have noticed an updated new tab page featuring the Copilot AI assistant as the central element. The grid with frequently visited website icons has been moved to the bottom. Other familiar elements are currently absent.
Fortunately, the Copilot chat window can function as a regular address or search bar. If a user enters a website address (for example, google.com) in the field and presses Enter, Edge will still open the corresponding web resource.
Since the new tab page is in early development, many Copilot queries currently don't work, and the browser simply redirects users to the Bing search engine. Additionally, Copilot can't yet interact with open browser tabs - such commands are ignored. These features will likely be added in the future.
At this time, it's unknown whether Microsoft plans to use this version of the new tab page as default or make it optional.
