Build 2025: Microsoft unveiled several new features for the Edge browser

Microsoft Edge

Microsoft has introduced three new features for its Edge browser designed to enhance usability for both regular users and IT administrators in enterprise environments. The announcements were made during the Build 2025 developer conference.

PDF Translation

While Microsoft Edge already supports text translation in PDF files, the current implementation requires manual text selection, creating a suboptimal user experience.

Microsoft has developed a new tool that enables full PDF translation across 70+ languages. Users simply need to open a PDF document in the browser and click the "Translate" button in the address bar. Edge will automatically detect the document's language and generate a new file with complete translation to the user's default language.

The feature is currently available in Microsoft Edge Canary builds and will roll out to the stable version in June 2025.

AI-Powered Agents

Microsoft Edge for Business will receive two new AI-powered capabilities:

  • AI Agents in Microsoft 365 Copilot: To reduce repetitive tasks, Microsoft is introducing specialized AI agents within Microsoft 365 Copilot. For example, a "Sales Assistant" agent will handle lead generation, customer interaction tracking, and sales analytics. These agents will become available in early June through Copilot Chat in Edge for Business' sidebar.
  • Document Analysis and Summarization: Copilot Chat in Edge will gain the ability to analyze, summarize, and answer questions about cloud-hosted Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files, enabling document workflows without switching applications. A preview is available for commercial users with Microsoft 365 Copilot licenses.

Web Content Filtering

A new intelligent filtering feature will automatically block undesirable websites, including adult content, fraudulent sites, and malware distributors. This proves particularly valuable for IT administrators in schools, SMBs, and organizations requiring content oversight.

The solution eliminates dependence on third-party filtering tools or manual blocklists. Administrators simply select categories from dynamically updated lists to enforce restrictions.

Configuration occurs through Edge Management Service, with monitoring available in Microsoft Power BI. The preview is currently available in Edge for Business, with free access for schools and small businesses. The feature requires managed Windows 10/11 devices with Microsoft 365 Education/Business Premium and Microsoft Intune licenses.
